LES «SCIENCES DE L'INFORMATION» EN QUESTIONS LE POINT DE VUE DU LECTEUR

Jean-Michel Salaun

"INFORMATION SCIENCES" IN QUESTION THE READER'S POINT 0F VIEW

Jean-Michel Salaun

Even if their roots lie in former professional traditions, the "information sciences" have asserted themselves in the past two decades on the basis of public policies on scientific and technological information and of the advent of new information processing technologies.

Conceptual thought has not however accompanied the development of tools. An analy sis of mediation based on the activity of reading, thus of the receiver, should permit further development of these sciences which would include the contribution of the history of books, of information economics or documentary information retrieval.

INFORMATION LOGIC, SERVICE LOGIC

Anne Mayère

How does one characterize what is at stake on the professional information market, and the production logic corresponding to it ? To analyse the information industry or market, reference is often made to models conceived outside of this field, such as those of the me dia or the manufacturing industry. But these models do not allow one to locate that which, in the production of information, depends on a logic of service or a production of goods. It is also necessary to better define the specificity of activities which permit information to be a product which can be valorized for a large clientele. We suggest exploring these ques tions particularly through the highly suggestive analysis of an art historian, on the breaks introduced by Rembrandt in the relationship between the artist, his work and the market.

UN PUBLIC POUR LA SCIENCE - L'ESSOR DE LA VULGARISATION AU XIX SIECLE

Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent

A PUBLIC FOR SCIENCE - POPULARIZATION IN THE l9th CENTURY

Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent

The word "popularization" appeared in the l9th century together with a host of new journals, magazines, books and series in France which attempted to "place science within everybody' s reach".

In sketching the outline of this massive entry of science into the media world, the article tries to show how a public was created for it. It includes in a historical problematique the idea of the necessity of scientific popularization, by showing that it was the result of a combination of circumstances and initiatives undertaken in the l9th century.

L'AFFAIRE DE LA MEMOIRE DE L'EAU POUR UNE SOCIOLOGIE DE LA COMMUNICATION SCIENTIFIQUE

Alain Kaufmann

THE MEMORY 0F WATER AFFAIR FOR A SOCIOLOGY 0F SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION

Alain Kaufmann

This article highlights the complex mediation linking the scientific field and its legiti mate products - articles in specialized reviews - to other networks of scientific informa tion, and to the publie area of mass-media in particular. The controversy around the "me mory of water affair" provides an opportunity to study the socio-technical networks on which scientific facts are based and which permit their circulation beyond the confines of laboratories. It prompts one to go beyond an internalist or extemalist type of approach to scientific activity, and provides elements for understanding the mutations which affect the communication and coordination system of the contemporary scientific field.

SOCIOLOGIE DES REVUES DE SCIENCES SOCIALES ET HUMAINES

Robert Boure

SOCIOLOGY 0F HUMAN AND SOCIAL SCIENCE REVIEWS

Robert Boure

This article shows that in attempting - in spite of the lack of knowledge gained in this field of research - to make an "object" of the scientific review, the researcher is not content to verify that it is not only a collection of articles in a periodic medium based on an editorial project. It is also a genre which draws its rules, its codes, even its dynamism (...) from its belonging to the scientific universe.

It also shows that the detour via the object "review" is pertinent for understanding the functioning of disciplines in their scientific, institutional or human dimensions.

ECONOMIE DES CONNAISSANCES ET DE L'INFORMATION

Fritz Machlup

ECONOMY 0F KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION

Fritz Machlup

In this article, Fritz Machlup, the renowned liberal economist from Princeton, examines the decision-making mechanisms of economic agents and the role of knowledge and com munication in this process. He analyses the modes of reasoning of both deciders and out side observers, professional economists, and their behaviour in relation to inevitable uncertainty. The article forms a comprehensive survey of the subject, of which the sources lie in the distant past of economic literature, and gives an account of the latest developments in the information revolution.

LA DISPARITION DU SUJET HEROIQUE : UNE LECTURE SOCIOLOGIQUE DE MILLE PROJETS DE TELEFILMS

Sabine Chalvon-Demersay

DISAPPEARANCE 0F THE HEROIC SUBJECT - A SOCIOLOGICAL

READING 0F A THOUSAND TV FILM PROJECTS

Sabine Chalvon-Demersay

In November 1991, the French public television channels, seeking new creators of tele vised fiction, organized a large contest with the object of gathering TV film projects and revealing new talents. They received over a thousand synopsis which were analyzed in a sociological perspective, and the article gives an account of a few of its main tendencies. After a description of the general characteristics of the authors, it presents some of the em blematic figures found throughout the corpus. These are chosen according to their fre quency of appearance, but also the way in which they structure the coherence of the imagi nary world in which they move, so revealing a certain hierarchy of values and merits and identifying a modem perception of misfortune and grievances, articulated around a proble matique of the obsession with power and the fear of impotence.
