TELEPHONE ET SOCIETE
Sidney H. Aronson
Sidney H. Aronson
The telephone is certainly one of the inventions which has had the greatest influence on our era. Its impact on trade, the business world and private life has been tremendous and, accordîng to Aronson, rural life discovered in it new conviviality.
The telephone is also the operator who
enables people to talk to one another and takes messages for subscribers
who are absent. She is a mine of information, particularly in
ear lier years when she was not so busy. Today the telephone
provides information, alarm caîl, and weather forecast services,
as in the past it was a vehicle for theatrical plays or concerts.
HELLO CENTRAL ?
HELLO CENTRAL? TELEPHONE COMPANIES, SUBSCRIBERS AND CREATION 0F A TELE PHONE CULTURE IN QUEBEC (1876-1920)
Michèle Martin
This article covers a period stretching from the launching of the telephone' s commercia lization to the industrialization of its production. It analyses user-company relations from a politico-economic viewpoint, integrating the role of women in both the production and utilization of this new communication tool.
Its viewpoint is opposed to that of the
Bell Telephone Company for whom the telephone developed "naturally"
in Canada.
APPELS PRIVES, SIGNIFICATIONS INDIVIDUELLES
HISTOIRE SOCIALE DU TELEPHONE AVANT-GUERRE AUX ETATS-UNIS
Claude S. Fischer

PERSONAL CALLS, PERSONAL MEANINGS A SOCIAL HISTORY 0F THE TELEPHONE
IN THE UNITED STATES BEFORE WW II
Claude S. Fischer
A psycho-historic analysis of personal use of the telephone
by Americans in the first half of this century enables one to
measure the real role of a practice which functioned be fore the
war as a "social technology", as did the automobile.
Reducing the number of unexpected visits, favouring the role of
women, the telephone was an accelerator of social life. As for
whether it facilitated romantic relationships - this issue was
of course taken up by Puritan circles !
LE TELEPHONE DANS LA VIE DE TOUS LES
JOURS UNE ENQUETE SUR L'UTILISATION DOMESTIQUE
Hubert Dordick, Robert La Rose
familiales;
- élaborer un modèle statistique d'utilisation du
téléphone;
- définir les motivations d'utilisation du téléphone
dans la vie de tous les jours;
THE TELEPHONE IN DAILY LIFE AN INQUIRY INTO DOMESTIC USE
Hubert Dordick, Robert La Rose
The aim of this study is to fil the gap which exists in the sociology of "telephone behaviour". It attempts to:
- describe behaviour with regard to the telephone and in relation to individual and family characteristics;
- develop a statistic model for telephone use;
- define the motives for telephone use in everyday life;
- and finally, take stock of user interest regarding new products and services.
The author, for whom the telephone is undeniably evolving into a personalized communication medium, suggests that in this case the notion of "mass media" be replaced by that of "individual media".
FONCTIONS LATENTES DU TELEPHONE : CE QUI MANQUE LORSQUE LA LIGNE EST COUPEE
Alan H. Wurtzel, Colin Turner
LATENT FUNCTIONS 0F THE TELEPHONE - WHAT MISSING THE EXTENSION MEANS
Alan H. Wurtzel, Colin Turner
A survey, taking advantage of a fire which left tens of thousands of Manhattan residents without telephones, attempted to verify diverse hypotheses on the social role and psychological functions of this medium.
The basic function of maintaining a "psychological neighbourhood" or "symbolic proxi mity" provided by the telephone as a possibility for immediate interaction, in particular with friends and family, seems to be almost irreplaceable by other media. ilence the feelings of isolation, anxiety and loss of control experienced by many of the persons questio ned. This function is however at the expense of the subscriber's dependence on others' communicational needs, and his being excluded from the real life of the neighbourhood which could in fact lessen his isolation.
L'USAGE RESIDENTIEL DU TELEPHONE AU JAPON
Yoko Maiwa
RESIDENTIAL USE 0F THE TELEPHONE IN JAPAN
Yoko Maiwa
This article, based on research undertaken by InfoCom Research mc. for NTT, examines individual/residential use of the telephone.
Generally speaking, use of the telephone has become increasingly diversified from mes sages/inquiries to chatting, and this trend can also be observed in Japan where many socio economic changes have taken place since WWII. Telephone density increased rapidly as Japan passed the developing country level, and Japanese values and life-style changed tre mendously with democratization, industrialization and urbanization.
QUAND LES MOTS MANQUENT A L'APPEL : L'ANALYSE D'UN CAS SINGULIER
Jack Whalen, Don Zimmerman, Marilyn R. Whalen
WHEN WORDS FAIL - A SINGLE CASE STUDY
Jack Whalen, Don Zimmerman, Marilyn R. Whalen
This paper reports on research into the
social organization of citizen calls to emergency service agencies,
focusing on the constitutive function of talk in the activity
of "calling for help". The authors explore how these
occasions of talk can themselves become problematic events for
members. Their report centers on the detailed analysis of a single,
very fate- fui conversation, showing how a seemingly aberrant
event can be understood in terms of the natural language practices
involved in its orderly, joint production by the actual parties
in the caîl. This single case analysis also reveals when
and how words can "fail": it is the sequential context
within which words are produced and the interactional treatment
they thereby receive that is crucial for whatever status and consequences
they corne to have.
DANS QUELLE MESURE LA SCIENCE EST-ELLE EXOGENE ?
Nathan Rosenberg
Nathan Rosenberg
Establishing a dialectic relationship between science and economics gives a clearer view of the development of scientific research and the state of technology.
From numerous examples in recent decades technology may now be considered as knowledge which partly orientates scientific research, whereas in general only the reverse causality is assumed.
In the recent past developments such as the telephone or solid-state physics have clearly shown how the emergence of new materials gave impetus to research in a largely interac tive process where the quest for profitability was periodically intensified by a new state of the possible.
